| About Sunrise Telecom
Sunrise Telecom was founded in October of 1991 to make portable test equipment faster, simpler, more powerful, and more affordable. The company is leading the telecom portable test equipment industry forward through innovations like the use of a graphical interface for presenting information on circuit status and feature upgrades accomplished by means of a software memory card.
The company's first product, the SunSet T1, was introduced in June of 1992. The set is a first-rate T1 test set by traditional measures in addition to providing a number of unique, user-friendly features. The SunSet E1, introduced in October 1992, extended the same advantages into the CCITT market.
Versatility is the hallmark of the company's third product, the SunSet T3. Introduced in July of 1994, this product replaces two common 15-pound pieces of test equipment with a single 2.8- pound handheld set, and is unrivaled in its complement of DS3 and DS1 signal interfaces. In August 1994, the company debuted the SunSet E10; this groundbreaking unit offers a combination of datacom, 2.048 Mbps transmission, and telecom capabilities in a handheld instrument. Its features include a broad range of datacom interfaces and full duplex drop and insert.
In December 1995, the SunSet T10 was introduced. This unit combines the functionality of up to seven separate analyzers in a single, handheld package, including testing for 1.544 Mbps, ISDN PRI, SS7, Datacom, DDS, VF, and Telephone Handset applications. The 2.048 Mbps equivalent, the SunSet E20, was introduced in 1999. This powerful unit verifies and troubleshoots line signaling and protocol problems. Its rich set of capabilities includes GSM, SS7, and ISDN PRI analysis.
Introduced in June 1998, the SunSet xDSL has been highly successful. The SunSet xDSL is the world's first field test set which can properly qualify copper lines for a variety of DSL applications. Utilizing actual DSL line codes and providing a broad spectrum of physical impairment measurement capabilities, the SunSet xDSL supports verification and troubleshooting of DSL circuits. Its modular format allows versatility that enables the test set to evolve with the service provider's network. Currently, plug-in modules are available for ADSL, IDSL, SDSL, G.SHDSL/HDSL2, Datacom, T1, IP, and VF TIMS, with future offerings in development. The SunSet MTT (Modular Testing Toolkit) was introduced in 2002 as an advanced, comprehensive test set that is compatible with the existing Sunrise module library.
Sunrise Telecom optical testing products include the SunSet OCx, introduced in late 1999, and the SunSet SDH, introduced in 2000. These powerful system verification units analyze low-rate electrical up to high-rate fiber optics SONET and SDH lines, respectively. SDH and SONET access is available at both electrical and optical interfaces, providing for in-depth analysis. In addition to transmission testing, the SunSet OCx and the SunSet SDH offer advanced protocol analysis features, including ATM testing. These new products are keeping Sunrise Telecom a step ahead. In 2001, the SunSet 10G began shipping as the world's smallest and lightest optical network test set operating at 10 Gbps.
Sunrise products have found broad acceptance in domestic and international markets alike with a customer base which includes local exchange carriers, cellular exchange operators, private network operators, and telecom equipment manufacturers. Telephone companies on five continents have standardized on the company's products.
Sunrise was founded by three former employees of Wiltron Company, a leading remote test equipment manufacturer for digital and analog applications. Paul Chang, Chief Executive Officer, earned his Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in 1984. Paul Marshall, Vice-President of Marketing and Sales, graduated with his Masters in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School in 1985. Robert C. Pfeiffer, a member of the Board of Directors, is a former CTO and Vice President Engineering. He earned his BSEE from Santa Clara University in 1988 and his MBA, also from Santa Clara University, in 1996.
The company was incorporated as a California Corporation on October 1, 1991 with initial funding from the three founders. Successive private stock offerings to outside investors in May 1992 and June 1993 financed marketing efforts and manufacturing ramp-up. Subsequently, the company financed its growth through operations, which have been profitable ever since shipments began in October of 1992. In July of 2000, Sunrise Telecom became a publicly traded company with an initial public offering, trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol SRTI.
Sunrise Telecom has acquired four complementary companies in the past three years. The first, Hukk Engineering, is a leader in QAM digital testing. This acquisition combines Hukk's strength in Cable TV digital testing with Sunrise's leading edge telecommunications testing solutions to provide world class digital products that address the rapid convergence of the two industries. The Hukk CR1200R Digital Signal Analyzer offers both QAM digital and return path testing. It allows a technician to determine the integrity of a cable installation quickly and easily.
The second company acquired was Pro.Tel. S.r.l., a provider of protocol analyzers and testers for telecommunications, enterprise network, and IP applications. The Ghepardo protocol analyzer/server is a highly versatile, multi-trunk unit capable of acting as a stand-alone, or as a distributed probe. Its multiple interfaces allow users to run a combination of tests simultaneously. Easily controlled by browser software, the unit allows multiple technicians concurrent access to analysis results; hundreds of reports and results are available. The new Sunrise Telecom Pro.Tel Division S.r.l. will be based in Modena, Italy. Intellimax, producers of network security software, is Sunrise Telecom's third acquisition.
Avantron Technologies, a Canadian corporation which specializes in the design and manufacture of Cable TV Test Equipment and Performance Monitoring systems, is the fourth acquisition which enhances Sunrise Telecom's Cable TV test product line. As of September 1, 2001, Hukk Engineering and Avantron Technologies have integrated to become the Sunrise Telecom Broadband Division.
In February, 2002, Sunrise Telecom acquired the CaLan Cable TV Test business from Agilent Technologies. CaLan products incorporate DigiSweep technology, the industry's fastest, high resolution, digital services-compatible sweep. The acquisition will result in a merger of the CaLan Cable TV Test business with the Sunrise Telecom Broadband family, further solidifying the commitment of Sunrise Telecom to provide leadership to the Cable Broadband Test Industry.
Sunrise Telecom is ISO 9001 certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for most of its products. Currently, 380 people are employed in the U.S. and internationally. Sunrise products are distributed by a worldwide network of representatives spanning more than 75 countries.
