Triple-Play Testing (IPTV, VoIP, VDSL, and HPNA)
Triple Play services delivered over xDSL have created an entirely new set of problems for even the most experienced field technicians. Minor delays accessing web sites and downloading email are commonplace and often go unnoticed by consumers. In sharp contrast, however, minor delays in video, IPTV, and other applications that require real-time delivery are noticed instantaneously and are extremely irritating to customers.

- VDSL/HPNA Testing
Unlike today's best effort Internet service, Triple Play services all require quality of service (QoS) guarantees. Typically, the problem lies in the copper pair, much of which was installed years ago in homes across the country. Basic copper pair wiring for original POTS services was qualified to provide service up to 4 KHz. When ADSL was added as technology progressed, performance reached up to 1.1 MHz. For IPTV and similar services to work properly and consistently, this must be extended to between 8 and 12 MHz. As FTTN for Triple Play services is installed, it is essential to test copper pairs (perform copper pair pre-conditioning or pre-qualification) to determine how they react to signals at this extended frequency and the QoS they are able to deliver, and to ensure proper upstream and downstream rates and downstream Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR).
Pre-conditioning copper pairs to meet the needs of Triple Play services is a daunting task, as traditional tests and tools designed to qualify copper and even ADSL, cannot assure technicians that the copper pairs are VDSL-ready. This puts the burden on service providers to ensure that any new Triple Play service they install, such as IPTV, must not only provide added features, but most important, deliver a better, clearer, crisper picture than what the consumer previously experienced. It is clear, then, how absolutely important are stringent pre-conditioning and installation testing using state-of-the-art equipment.
The following Sunrise Telecom products can help providers fully qualify copper cables at VDSL frequencies, facilitating a very important part in IPTV testing.
