This course is designed to train installation technicians to efficiently test and troubleshoot common ADSL installation issues using the Sunrise SunSet xDSL tester. The full course includes a total of 24 hours of instruction over 4 days, including 6-8 hours of hands-on lab activities. The course is offered in two subsets (tracks), depending on the technician's responsibilities and tasks. Pre-requisites

A basic understanding of twisted-pair wiring
Basic electronics terminology (resistance, capacitance, attenuation)
Basic PC hardware interface identification (USB, PCI, ISA)
Some familiarity with basic IP and ATM terminology
Basic telephone system terminology and acronyms (CO, MDF, CPE, IW)
Familiarity with DSL equipment and the process of DSL installation

Objectives

Objectives vary depending on Track.

Day 1

Compare DSL with competing technologies for high speed communication
Match common applications to DSL technologies
List several electrical and physical impairments that can impact DSL service
Utilize basic DSL terminology to identify components, locations and service types
Recognize classic TDR signatures for common copper pair issues
Use tester controls to approximate the distance to, and length of a bridge tap
List the pair termination requirements for common electrical tests
Discuss the benefits of two-ended testing, when it is available
List common DSL modem types and their interfaces

Day 2
List four different DSL modules available for the SSxDSL
Identify key applications of the SSxDSL Tester for ADSL installation
Navigate the SSxDSL menus to clear NVRAM and identify options installed
Perform basic electrical pair qualifications using the SSxDSL 
Connect an SSxDSL modem to terminate an ADSL line
Interpret ADSL Turn-Up Results and compare to acceptable criteria
Locate areas of potential disturbers using the DMT Bits-per-tone graphic
Monitor an ADSL connection for robustness
Setup and run an IP Ping test on the SSxDSL Tester
Disconnect the SSxDSL from an ADSL circuit without generating an alarm condition at the DSLAM

Compare the OSI model and TCP/IP 
Identify the standards used for an IP "Ping" in an Ethernet/Router environment
List common protocols deployed on the PC for DSL installations
Contrast DSL Bridges and Routers
List some advantages and disadvantages of static versus dynamic IP configurations
Identify where NAT would be employed in a DSL environment
Identify where DHCP would be employed in a DSL environment
List the most common authentication protocols used in a PPP environment
Explain where DSL devices use ATM connections
List the most common encapsulation protocols used in DSL connections
Identify where a B-RAS would be used in a broadband network
Troubleshoot common problems associated with IP over DSL Ping testing
